DHCP Migration - Cross Forest
i have existing ad - oldco.com, dhcp configured.
i migrating entire ad infrastructure new domain - newco.com.
the migration of computers phased on period of weeks / months.
dhcp scopes remain same, dns servers different (new dns servers in new ad).
can please validate approach:
- set conditional forwarders on oldco.com dns servers newco.com
- migrate pcs oldco.com newco.com using admt (dhcp not domain dependent pcs should pick dhcp lease oldco.com dhcp server. oldco.com dns settings applied conditional forwarding in place. (i add newco.com dns servers oldco.com dhcp scope settings?)
- after pcs have been migrated newco.com, migrate dhcp databases oldco.com newco.com dhcp servers (edit dns settings use newco.com dns servers).
- de-authorise oldco.com dhcp servers, authorise newco.com dhcp servers.
i have completed several dhcp migrations in same forest ok steps 3 , 4. cross-forest element concerned with.
hi,
according description, understanding want migrate current ad infrastructure new domain, , need confirm plan migrating dhcp.
clients obtain ip lease dhcp server provides them dhcpack message. there 1 dhcp server, clients still obtain ip lease old dhcp server. better set conditional forwarders(to transfer dns queries new domain) instead of adding new dns server scope option. or may create secondary zone on old dns server obtain read-only copy zone file new dns server.
manually assigned new dns server of tcp/ip properties on client needed when client join new domain.
you may lab tests before migration. , remember backup related data.
best regards,
eve wang
