Server 2016 Essentials and Remote Desktop Services

in licensing data sheet for server 2016, says:

"essentials edition cloud-connected first server, ideal for small businesses 25 users , 50 devices. essentials is option customers using foundation edition, not available windows server 2016."

however, appears cannot run remote desktop services rds cals under essentials.  we have number of deployments using server 2012r2 foundation, rds role , rds cals work size of build.

is case server standard 2016 smallest licensable version supports rds?

as you've mentioned, remote desktop services (rds) not compatible windows server essentials (installing can wreak havoc on underlying "windows server essentials experience" server role configuration/functionality). therefore, need setup second "application" server running full gamut of rds server roles instead (or, look at "wse remoteapp 2016" add-in windows server 2016 essentials).

unfortunately, there isn't "foundation" edition of windows server 2016, , so you would indeed need to use "standard" edition of windows server 2016 rds. being said, believe standard includes 2 + 1 virtualization rights, , can purchase a single copy of windows server 2016 standard, install it on your physical server hyper-v server role, and then create 2 separate virtual machines (vm) in hyper-v. 1 vm run standard windows server essentials experience server role, , other vm application server running standard with the full gamut of rds server roles.
