Windows 2008 - Mount Points - Performance

this more "opinion" question unless there known statistics out there...

are there known performance issues using windows 2008 sp2 mount points?

i have volume containing single file share, (which unfortunately, not maintained), , has 2 tb of files totalling > 3 million files.  performance on file share rather poor.  plus dpm has problems backing tape.

ruling out factors such storage (config of san, spindles, etc.), networking, etc., purely windows perspective. when user atttempts browse folder traverses mount point, there known performance issues?  think should improve performance files on own "volume".  curious if there known "beware" before attempting this.

thanks.
