hello,

first start removing exchange server dc not recommended, not microsoft. exchange should installed on domain member servers.

for ad upgrade new os dcs please see http://msmvps.com/blogs/mweber/archive/2010/02/10/upgrading-an-active-directory-domain-from-windows-server-2003-to-windows-server-2008-or-windows-server-2008-r2.aspx

for exchange 2003 important have exchange 2003 sp2 installed windows server 2008 r2 able connect gc.

windows xp has no problems work windows server 2008 r2 dcs. use them since years way without problem.

with beginning windows vista new profile version, no.2 added. within profile folders see new created profile beside old 1 there no conflict. \\server\sharename\profilename in old os version , v2 profiles \\server\sharename\profilename.v2
