max memory configuration

hi,

server has memory in total 24 gb

there 2 sql instances in on server , has 24 gb total memory.

if assign

max memory in sql ins1 16 gb

and

max memory in sql ins2 12 gb

total going beyond 24gb,  16+12=28 gb not available in server. how sql ins1 & ins2 behave??

you might want give each instance memory proportional expected workload or database size. approach has advantage when new processes or instances start up, free memory available them immediately. there should @ least 20% memory available os , other process , otherwise os facing memory pressure generate error 'available megabytes of memory low'.
