hi mervyn,
actually found solution yesterday:
i found matt williamson's script @ ( http://www.bunkerhollow.com/blogs/matt/archive/2008/09/24/hyper-v-vm-backup-script-batch-file.aspx ). modified powershell script shut down vms, copy vhd files folder, start vms again .bat file , log actions .log file. can see @ bottom of blog modified script added download library.
hope blog (and script) can others backing hyperv .vhd files.
