Trying to Learn More - Lack Ability to Set-Up Domain

hello, i'm student trying learn more using , configuring windows server on summer, i've run seems major snag.  my school year internship extends summer have access plenty of free hardware , software yet school's existing domain prohibits ability create child domains.  thus, question somewhat unorthodox, i'm wondering if there still can play around , learn in-spite of inability create domain or if it's waste of time.  i suspect latter, i'd appreciate suggestions of topics , roles can experiment considering situation. thanks!

please understand if have not administrative permission, not create new domain in school’s existing domain. if want learn more windows server, suggest create testing domain in local machine virtual machine. if using windows server 2008 , later, suggest create virtual machine using hyper-v. more information, refer following article.
