Invisible User Defined Hierarchy

i've got dimension that's giving me fits in ssms - dimension contains 5 attributes, of have attribute hierarchies hidden, , 1 user defined hierarchy, should visible - there's not option hide afterall.  yet, hierarchy not visible in ssms.   it's there in database - can query it, refuses seen in ssms.  i've renamed it, deleted , re-created it, persists in being invisible.   many other hierarchies in other dimensions visible - including other dimensions attribute hierarchies hidden.

any ideas?  ssms 2012 against ssas 2008 r2 or 2012 (same behavior on both).

i have seen problems in ssas/ssms before things names misbehaved (but didn't produce kind of error), so... fwiw, dimension named "receiver" , hierarchy named "hierarchy".  shouldn't matter, but...

there's 1 thing unique dimension in cube - has 11 million members.  shouldn't matter either, but...

i solved deleting troublesome dimension , re-creating scratch, re-adding cube , re-establishing measure group relationships.  comparing old , new .dim files, can see nothing explain this, it's hard sure given noise in diff that's present in of bi designer-produced files.  other some re-ordering of attributes , cleaning names, new dimension appears functionally identical old.  *shrug*
