XP SP3 is not installed by schedule when users are logged off, or at shutdown for non-admin users.

i trying update legacy desktop environment of 300 machines xp sp3. i have provisioned wsus server, , syncing, approval, reporting working great.

the applied wsus group policy on test machines (taken rsop) is:

configure automatic updating: 4 - auto download , schedule install scheduled install day: 0 - every day scheduled install time: 04:00

also, following policies set:

enabled specify intranet microsoft update service location enabled enable client-side targeting disabled reschedule automatic updates scheduled installations enabled no auto-restart logged on users scheduled automatic updates installations enabled automatic updates detection frequency enabled allow automatic updates immediate installation disabled delay restart scheduled installations enabled re-prompt restart scheduled installations enabled allow non-administrators receive update notifications disabled not display 'install updates , shut down' option in shut down windows dialog box disabled not adjust default option 'install updates , shut down' in shut down windows dialog box

as can see, i'm trying install updates overnight (if computers on) , otherwise using "install updates , shutdown" option.

our users not local administrators, why i've enabled "allow non-administrators receive update notifications".

this setup works great security , critical updates i've approved, except "windows xp service pack 3 (kb936929)" (which revision 112, revised 20/05/2009). update downloads client computer correctly, , prompts local administrator install.

however, not install @ scheduled install time. doesn't try install. %windir%\windowsupdate.log shows:

2010-07-15	04:00:10:073	1200	704	au	forced install timer expired scheduled install 2010-07-15	04:00:10:089	1200	704	au	updatedownloadproperties: 0 download(s) still in progress. 2010-07-15	04:00:10:089	1200	704	au	setting au scheduled install time 2010-07-15 16:00:00

it not install @ shutdown (even when logged in administrator):

2010-07-15	08:46:51:540	1200	d24	au	au found 0 updates install @ shutdown

however, if log in administrator , manually click yellow exclamation mark , start install, works:

i'm thinking might related fact when it's being approved, update says "the selected update requires user input , not support installation deadline.", except i've found lots of people on web apparently have deployed xpsp3 through wsus no problem...

so, doing wrong? how install xp sp3 through wsus without having log every computer local admin?

many @ all.

thanks reply lawrence.

well is  interesting you've got different revision there.

on wsus server, "download updates in these languages" selected, , "english" checked. clients english language.  the locale on english (new zealand) - hence date format.

your comments led me down path:

i decided try purging update wsus , redownloading. declined it, followed these steps  http://msmvps.com/blogs/athif/archive/2005/10/27/purge-delete-the-downloaded-patches-on-wsus-server.aspx  and when went re-approve it, noticed there 2 entries xp sp3! have identical descriptions , details 1 has revision of 111 , 1 of 112.

the revision 111 update doesn't have warning "requires user input , not support installation deadline" when approving it!!

i'm testing now, looking promising... i'll post once i've got results.

[edit] worked! decline update revision 112, accept 111.
