when boot computer, message: "remote desktop licensing mode not configured".

when bought server , operational system (server 2012 r2 foundation), did deep research user cals , limitations , features of each server 2012 version. our user count not exceeding 10 people, figured foundation best option. still, message licencing not complete.

to sum up: 5 people need able connect server via remote desktop connection - @ same time.

the message says have 40 days left use remote connection.

what have do? need buy something? if do, what? thought foundation include fixed amount of users, wrong?

hi nico,

to use rds, each unique human (per user) or unique device (per device) needs purchased rds cal.  licensing not concurrent.  rds cals not included , must purchased separately.  recommend purchasing rds cals via microsoft volume licensing program instead of retail.  though small can still purchase via volume agreement.

1. once have rds cals, please install rd licensing role service on server using server manager , use rd licensing manager (licmgr.exe) activate , install purchased rds cals.  critical keep original license information (agreement number, authorization number, 25-digit license key rds retail pack, emails, vlsc logon info, etc.) in safe place.  helpful keep in records 35-digit licensing server id shown in rd licensing manager properties window @ bottom--make sure capture 35-digits since last digit partially cut off.

2. did create rds deployment using server manager -- add roles , features -- rds install -- quick/standard -- session-based -- etc., or did install rd session host role service?

  • if created rds deployment, need set licensing mode , add licensing server name in server manager -- rds -- overview -- deployment overview -- tasks -- edit deployment properties -- rd licensing tab.  licensing mode should match type of rds cals purchased.  additionally, need create session collection if didn't use quick start.
  • if did not create rds deployment, need configure licensing mode name of rd licensing server using gpedit.msc:

computer configuration\ administrative templates\ windows components\ remote desktop services\ remote desktop session host\ licensing

use specified remote desktop license servers     enabled

set remote desktop licensing mode     enabled

thanks.
