Windows Server 2008 R2 Remove/Disable Briefcase option

there are vulnerabilities exploit briefcase on windows editions released in november 2012. disable/remove option users on remote desktops services (terminal servers) servers, users not need option anyways. there way this?

right mouse click on desktop > new > briefcase.

hi,

i have not tested it, you could remove right-click menu option deleting following key (export first have a backup):

hkcr\briefcase

there other briefcase-related registry keys may consider removing well.  examples:

  • hkcr\*\shellex\contextmenuhandlers\briefcasemenu
  • hkcr\*\shellex\propertysheethandlers\briefcasepage
  • hkcr\clsid\{85bbd920-42a0-1069-a2e4-08002b30309d}
  • hkcr\folder\shellex\contextmenuhandlers\briefcasemenu
  • hkcr\folder\shellex\propertysheethandlers\briefcasepage

you may want remove hkcr\briefcase minimize amount of non-standard changes making server.

the above not remove briefcase, there may way user start it.  may consider setting ntfs permisisions syncui.dll (both in system32 , syswow64) deny for regular users.  1 thing keep in mind when setting permissions syncui.dll may need updated in future, example, because of service pack or update.  believe requires trustedinstaller has ability read/write file.
